It was on this day back in 1981 that Donald Fagen and Walter Becker announced the dissolution of Steely Dan, perhaps the only band in history to be named after a steam-powered dildo. Both admitted at the time that music was no longer their primary passion, and the L.A. decadence that they captured so well on their 1980 album, Gaucho, ultimately did them in.
The duo returned, sardonic wit firmly intact, to win four Grammys for Two Against Nature in 2001.
