Right now, if you go to the website for NBC's new show Hit Me Baby One More Time, you'll hear the jaunty beat of the Knack's "My Sharona," possibly the only song about a hot Jewish girl performed by a band consisting entirely of Jewish guys. It's a Yidstravaganza and we're totally rooting for them on Thursday, when they compete against Tommy "867-5309" Tutone, Vanilla Ice, and a few other former stars for a chance at a comeback.
Hit Me Baby One More Time is a marriage of The Surreal Life and American Idol: famous bands you forgot existed play their biggest hit plus something from the current charts. Last week, e.g., Arrested Development (who SO deserved their victory) did "Tennessee" and Los Loney Boys' "Heaven." Our Jewboys will be playing "My Sharona" along with Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl," which we think will suit them nicely. Only one question: Didn't they already get their chance at a comeback in 1993, when Winona Ryder danced around to "My Sharona" in the convenience store in Reality Bites?
