Atlantic City used to be a sort of Valhalla of musicians from the '50s and '60s, where the local oldies station would come to life in order to rock (or at least "rock") the casinos. You got the impression that most concertgoers were Jewish grandparents who'd been just waiting for their return to the beach since they got back from Boca in March. When the aging Sex Pistols played the Trump Marina in 2003, the city's music scene lurched forward some twenty years, but it was still firmly stuck in the past. Now, though, Atlantic City is making a bid for the present. This July, the House of Blues opens in the Showboat Casino. Challah Famers the Counting Crows play on July 7, joining a lineup that includes Eminem, Gov't Mule and a tribute to Sublime. Counting Crows? Sublime? OK, so we're not talking about Frankie Valli exactly, but it definitely appears that America's former playground is still milking the nostalgia factor. And we find that strangely reassuring.
