# Time out of mind

It was on this day back in 1981 that Donald Fagen and Walter Becker announced the dissolution of [Steely Dan](http://www.jewsrock.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=challah.view&page=S), perhaps the only band in history to be named after a steam-powered dildo. Both admitted at the time that music was no longer their primary passion, and the L.A. decadence that they captured so well on their 1980 album, [Gaucho](http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004YX39/qid=1119449434/sr=2-1/ref=pd%5Fbbs%5Fb%5F2%5F1/104-3827196-2136702?ref=jewsrock.org), ultimately did them in.

The duo returned, sardonic wit firmly intact, to win four Grammys for [Two Against Nature](http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004GOXS/qid%3D1119449471/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/104-3827196-2136702?ref=jewsrock.org) in 2001.
